John Alexander Kent (surnommé "Johnny Kentowski") est né à Winnipeg, Manitoba, au Canada le 23 juin 1914. Il obtint son brevet de pilote en 1931. En 1935, il s'engage dans la RAF et est envoyé au 5 FTS (Flying Training School) le 15 mars. En février 1936, il rejoint l'Escadron 19 à Duxford. En octobre 1937, il va au Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) à Farnborough. John Kent est ensuite envoyé au Photographic Development Unit (PDU) en mai 1940 et à Hawarden en juillet. Le 2 août 1940, il devient Flight Commander du 303e escadron "polonais" basé à Northolt. Le 9 (ou 3) septembre 1940, il obtient ses premières victoires en abattant un Me Bf 110 et un Ju 88. Le 23 septembre, il abat un Me Bf 109 et endommage un Fw 58 au-dessus de Dungeness. Quatre jours plus tard, il abat un Ju 88 au-dessus de Londres. Le 1er octobre, il attaque seul 40 Me Bf 109 au-dessus de la côte sud de l'Angleterre et en abat 2 (dont 1 probable). John Kent reçoit la DFC le 25 octobre 1940 puis est envoyé à Biggin Hill le jour suivant pour prendre le commandement du Squadron 92. Le 1er novembre, il abat un Me Bf 109 et deux autres le jour suivant. Le 24 décembre 1940, il reçoit la décoration polonaise Virtuti Militari pour son action avec l'escadron 303. Il retourne à Northolt en juin 1941 pour commander un Wing polonais de quatre escadrons. Le 21 juin, il abat un Me Bf 109. Le 27 juin, il détruit au sol un Me Bf 109 en France. Puis il détruit 2 Me Bf 109 le 3 et le 20 juillet.

  Kent was then posted to the Photographic Development Unit (PDU) in May 1940 and at Hawarden in July. On 2 August 1940, he became Flight Commander at the 303 "Polish" Squadron based at Northolt. On 9 (or 3) September 1940, he obtained his first combat victories by shooting down a Me Bf 110 and a Ju 88. On 23 September, he shot down a Me Bf 109 and damaged a Fw 58 over Dungeness. Four days later, he shot down a Ju 88 over London. On October 1, he attacked alone 40 Me Bf 109s over the south coast of England and shot down 2 of them (1 probable).  John Kent was awarded the DFC on 25 October 1940 and was sent to Biggin Hill the following day to take command of the 92 Squadron.On 1 November, he shot down a Me Bf 109 and two more the following day. On 24 December 1940, he was awarded the Polish Virtuti Militari decoration for his achievements with 303 Squadron. He then went back to Northolt in June 1941 to lead the Polish Wing of four squadrons. On 21 June, he shot down a Me Bf 109. On 27 June, he destroyed a Bf 109 on the ground in France. He destroyed 2 Me Bf 109 on July 3 and 20.

Il part ensuite commander le Wing de Kenley en août 1941. Il revendique des Me Bf 109 les 7 et 16 août. Il revient ensuite au 53 OTU à Heston puis à Llandow avant d'être envoyé au Canada et en Amérique pour une tournée de conférences. John Kent reçoit une barre à sa DFC le 21 octobre 1941. En juin 1942, il devient Station Commander à Church Stanton. En octobre, il est affecté au Fighter Command HQ en tant que Wing Commander de la Formation. Deux mois plus tard, il part au Moyen-Orient pour prendre le commandement du secteur 17 à Benghazi, Libye. Le 25 janvier 1943, il endommage un Ju 88 au-dessus de l'aérodrome de Benina. Il revient au Royaume Uni en mars 1944 pour un cours d'instructeur à la central Flying School d'Upavon. Kent prend sa retraite avec le rang de Group Captain le 1er décembre 1956. Il décède le 7 octobre 1985.

John Kent was awarded a Bar to his DFC on 21 October 1941.In June 1942, he became Station Commander of Church Stanton. In October, he was posted to Fighter Command HQ as a Wing Commander of Training. Two months later, he was posted to the Middle East to take command of 17 Sector in Benghazi, Libya. On 25 January 1943, he damaged a Ju 88 over Benina airfield. He returned to the UK in March 1944 for an instructor’s course at the Central Flying School, Upavon. Kent retired from the RAF service with the rank of Group Captain on 1 december 1956. He died on 7 October 1985.
