Le hasard fait bien les choses. C'est en visitant mon site et notamment la partie consacrée au Dewoitine D 520 que Monsieur Daniel Chanquet eut l'occasion de reconnaître sur la photo ci-dessus le D 520 n°2 qu'il pensait alors piloté par Jean Tailhade, père de son ami Philippe Tailhade. Une correspondance s'est donc établie entre nous afin d'essayer d'en savoir plus sur la carrière de Jean Tailhade. Daniel Chanquet m'envoya ainsi de nombreuses photos archivées précieusement par Philippe Tailhade. Ci dessous ces photos de la famille TAILHADE, totalement inédites : pour certaines d'entre-elles (en fin de page), des questions restent posées.

Fate is a good provider. By visiting my website, especially the part dedicated to the Dewoitine D 520, Mister Daniel Chanquet had the opportunity to recognize on the above photo the D 520 n°2 which he thought it was probably flown by Jean Tailhade, the father of his friend Philippe Tailhade. We then started to exchange emails in order to discover more about Jean Tailhade's career. Daniel Chanquet sent me also several photos cautiously archived by Philippe Tailhade. Here below the photos of the TAILHADE family, totally new. For some of them (see at the bottom of the page), some questions remain.

Nous savons peu de choses sur Jean Tailhade : il est né le 30 octobre 1918. Bien que sa famille pense qu'il aurait été pilote, on ne retrouve pas sa trace dans la liste des brevets de pilote de l'Armée de l'Air ni dans celle des pilotes privés entre 1930 et 1955. Il est donc peu probable qu'il ait été pilote de Dewoitine D 520 au Groupe de Chasse et de Bombardement GCB I/18 "Vendée". Ci-dessous deux nouvelles photos du D 520 n°2. Jean Tailhade aurait donc pu être mécanicien volant : sa famille indique qu'il aurait volé sur De Havilland Dragon Rapide et sur Potez (lequel ?). Il a été affecté en 1945 ou 1946 à la base de Dubosville à Tunis jusqu'au début des années 50. Il aurait été mécanicien-navigant sur quadrimoteur. Vers la fin des années 50, il est tombé malade et fut interdit de vol puis muté à Bordeaux au Camp Guynemer, allée de Boutaut (Bordeaux nord).
We have a few information about Jean Tailhade : he was born on October 30th, 1918. Despite his family thinks he would have been pilot, we do not find his name in the list of the pilot's licences of the Air Force nor in the private pilots list between 1930 and 1955. It means he was probably not pilot of Dewoitine D 520 in the Fighter and Bomber Group GCB I / 18 "Vendée". Here below two new photos of D 520 # 2. Jean Tailhade could then have been flight engineer : his family indicates he would have flown on De Havilland Dragon Rapide and on Potez (which one ?). He was sent in 1945 or 1946 to Dubosville air base, Tunis (Tunisia) until the early 50's. He would have been flight engineer on four-engine aircraft. In the late 50's, he got sick and was sent to the camp Guynemer in Bordeaux (Northern Bordeaux, France).

El Aouina, Tunisie, novembre 1937. Un groupe de 5 Farman 22 menés par le Général Pastier effectue un raid Istres-Saïgon dans le cadre de Manœuvres Aériennes de l'Outre-Mer. Partis de Tunis le 10 novembre, le groupe se pose au Caire le 11 à 15h10.
El Aouina, Tunisa, November, 1937. A group of 5 Farman 22 leaded by General Pastier operated a raid Istres-Saigon according to Overseas Air Operations. They left Tunis on November 10th, and landed in Cairo the 11th at 3.10 pm.

Fabriqué en 1944, ce Lightning de reconnaissance photo était le second avion du Lt John Sanders. Le nom de cet avion, "Sandy's Bandwagon", était peint sur le nez. Photo prise probablement au printemps 1945 à Haguenau. Cet avion aurait été laissé à l'abandon en novembre 1945 et réformé le 2 mai 1946.
Manufactured in 1944, this reconnaissance Lightning was Lt John Sanders' second plane. It's name, "Sandy's Bandwagon", was painted on the nose. This photo would have probably been taken in Spring 1945, in Haguenau (France). This aircraft was scrapped in November 1945, and condemned on may 2^nd, 1946.
